Blue Fins

Blue Fins Cap

The Blue Fins is Cronulla Surf Life Saving Clubs nippers program designed for children and young adults with a special needs or a disability 6yrs and older.

The program aims to give young people with disabilities beach safety and water awareness skills and offers inclusion within our mainstream groups.

Blue Fins are run entirely by volunteers and the program ensures that students with disabilities and their parents can be involved with surf skills and lifesaving like their siblings, peers and community.

The Blue Fins, will run for 10 consecutive weeks from the start of the season on 13 October 2019 finishing at the Christmas break-up on 15 December 2019.

Physical activities include traditional events which lifesavers and nippers undertake. These include sprint relays, flags, wading in shallow water, ocean/indoor pool swimming, basic paddle board skills and fun games that encourage ocean/beach enjoyment. They are modified to suit the participants physical and sensory interests and abilities.

A parent/guardian needs to be in attendance on the beach during each session for encouragement and support.

All members need to be registered with the club, original photo ID needs to be sited to finalise initial registration i.e: birth certificate or passport.

Our Blue Fins was first established around 6yrs ago and was initially a joint alliance with The Cerebal Palsy Association during its first year. From then the club has helped maintain the program with dedicated volunteers/age managers/ group coordinators. Some small sponsorship from community groups/local church has helped fund the odd piece of equipment from time to time. We were originally called the BlackCaps but have recently renamed our group to the BlueFins.
